Many countries absolve the need to acquire a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) for their citizens. The government of Canada has introduced the electronic travel authorization (eTA) for such candidates, simplifying entry for those eligible under specific Canadian Immigration Programs.
What is eTA?
eTA is a pre-screening system that was introduced between 2015 and 2016. Before this system, visa-exempt international citizens seeking entry to Canada had limited options for assessing their admissibility until reaching a Canadian port of entry. Now, with the eTA, candidates can complete an online form before departure, ensuring a smoother experience when applying for a Canada entry visa or eTA.
Note: Until 29th September 2016, individuals traveling to Canada without an eTA could board their flight with a valid passport. As long as they met Canada’s minimum entry requirements, border services allowed them to enter without an eTA. However, those from visa-exempt countries now need an eTA before departure, particularly for air travel. Exceptions include U.S. citizens, who do not require a TRV or eTA, and Green Card holders in the U.S., regardless of nationality.
The Canada Visa Consultancy Services highly recommend pre-approval through the eTA system for TRV-exempt candidates planning short-term stays in Canada.
Who Needs an eTA?
Individuals who need an eTA to temporarily move to Canada must provide personal information and answer questions related to criminality and medical issues. The eTA remains valid for 5 years or until the applicant’s passport expires. If either of these occur, the eTA is canceled, or a new eTA is issued.
The eTA form requires details such as:
For applicants with physical or mental disabilities who cannot apply online, a paper application is available, along with other exceptional methods.
Exemptions from eTA Pre-Approval Include:
For those seeking information on Canadian permanent residency or guidance from Canada spouse visa consultants, the eTA serves as a vital tool for stress-free travel, whether for tourism, study, or work. Programs like Study and Work in Canada or applying for Canadian permanent residency can open opportunities for further integration.
